COPD flare-ups (also called exacerbations) significantly worsen your symptoms. Flare-ups can be mild, moderate, or severe. When a COPD flare-up is moderate or severe, you may experience:
A moderate flare-up may require you to take additional medications like oral steroids and/or antibiotics. A severe flare-up may send you to the hospital. Contact your doctor immediately if you think you are having a flare-up.
Once you have had an exacerbation, you are more likely to experience another one. If your COPD is more severe, flare-ups typically happen more often and are also more severe.
COPD flare-ups may be unexpected and can even send you to the hospital.
